At different points in life, we all ask ourselves: What’s next? Whether you’re just starting your career, considering a change, or stepping into a lifelong dream, the journey is always evolving.
For me, that evolution has been constant. With over 30 years of experience in communications, administrative leadership, and community engagement, I’ve had the privilege of supporting others, solving problems, and managing complex responsibilities. But beyond the titles and roles, one truth has always remained: I have always been a writer at heart.
Finding Purpose in Experience
Throughout my career, I’ve helped shape policies, supported organizations, and built connections within my community. I’ve been the voice behind important initiatives, the problem-solver in high-pressure situations, and the advocate for programs that make a difference. Yet, at my core, storytelling has always been my passion.
For years, my dream of being a writer lived quietly alongside my professional roles. I wrote poetry, edited documents, and crafted short stories—but I wasn’t fully embracing that part of myself. Now, at 61, I am leaning into that dream with confidence, proving that age is not a barrier but a powerful advantage.
Where Do You Begin? Questions That Matter
If you’re searching for direction, start by asking yourself:
- What has stayed with you throughout your life?
- What activities, interests, or dreams have never faded?
- What do you return to, time and time again?
- What skills and lessons have shaped you?
- Which experiences have strengthened your resilience?
- What do people seek your expertise in?
- How do you want to leave your mark?
- Do you want to inspire, create, or build something lasting?
- What kind of legacy do you hope to leave in your career and community?
Starting Anew with Courage
For me, writing has been more than a dream—it’s been a lifelong calling waiting to be fully realized. Now, as I take steps toward building my writing career, I remind myself (and others) that beginnings can happen at any time.
Maybe your next chapter involves learning a new skill, starting a business, mentoring others, or shifting into an entirely new field. No matter the choice, the key is embracing it with purpose.
