The Justice System’s Cycle of Neglect: A Call for Change

Our justice system was designed to uphold accountability, protect communities, and provide a path toward rehabilitation. Yet, time and time again, we see individuals caught in a revolving door of incarceration—never truly getting the help they need.

Too often, offenders—many of whom struggle with addiction, mental health challenges, or deep-seated trauma—are placed in prison rather than in systems designed to address the root causes of their behavior. While accountability is necessary, locking someone away without addressing their underlying struggles only delays the inevitable. Many are released back into society without direction or support, leading them straight back into destructive cycles. Some return to addiction, some fall back into crime, and others meet tragic ends, whether through overdose or desperate encounters with law enforcement.

Our failure to invest in mental health care and rehabilitation programs perpetuates this endless cycle. Instead of meaningful intervention, we offer punishment—without a plan for reintegration. Without tools to heal, without guidance to change, without real opportunities to rebuild, what other path do they have?

The reality is that people are not defined solely by their worst moments. Many offenders want to turn their lives around. Some seek redemption by helping others—mentoring those who have walked similar roads, offering employment to those struggling to find second chances, striving to break free from the past. But when these efforts are met with indifference rather than support, the battle becomes impossible to win alone.

It’s time for the justice system to evolve. It’s time for mental health and rehabilitation to take priority. Instead of waiting for tragedy, we must act before the cycle repeats. Lives are at stake—not only those harmed by violence but also those desperately trying to escape it.

Let’s not settle for a system that only punishes. Let’s create one that helps rebuild.
