Honoring Sacrifice: The Meaning of Memorial Day

This weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. For many, it’s a time to fire up the grill, gather around a bonfire, or spend peaceful moments on the water. But as we celebrate, let’s take a step back and reflect on why we are free to do all these things.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend—it is a day of remembrance, a solemn tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. While we often hear “Happy Memorial Day,” it’s important to remember that for many, this day carries deep reflection, grief, and reverence.

Freedom isn’t free. The cost is measured in lives given, battles fought, and sacrifices made. Because of the courage of those who served, we have the ability to live freely and build our futures without fear.

A Personal Tribute

I want to take a moment to honor some incredible heroes in my own family who answered the call to serve:

My father, Virsel, who served in WWII – His dedication and bravery shaped the legacy of freedom we cherish today. My uncle Art, who also served in WWII – His sacrifice and service stand as a testament to strength and perseverance. 🇺🇸 My grandfather, Arthur, who served in WWI – A man of unwavering courage, who faced one of history’s greatest conflicts, Many other friends and family – Each of them played a role in protecting our country and ensuring future generations could live in peace.

Their service will never be forgotten, and I carry deep gratitude for the sacrifices they made.

Ways to Honor Memorial Day:

  • Visit a local veterans’ memorial or cemetery and pay tribute.
  • Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 PM local time.
  • Donate to organizations that support Gold Star families and veterans.
  • Fly the American flag at half-staff in recognition of those lost.
  • Share the stories of fallen heroes to keep their legacies alive.

To all who have served, and especially to those who never made it home—we remember. We honor. We are forever grateful.
