Luxury means different things to different people. Some define it by extravagance—designer brands, lavish vacations, or five-star dining. Others see it as small, everyday comforts—a cozy blanket, a favorite coffee, or the ability to slow down and savor life.
For me, luxury isn’t about status or wealth—it’s about comfort, connection, and the ability to appreciate the simple things in life.
Growing Up Without Life’s “Luxuries”
I grew up in a small rural community, where life was simple but full of meaning. At one point, my family lived in a tiny cottage without running water—we had to pump water from an old hand pump outside, and our outhouse was just beyond the back door. In the winter, we relied on wood heat to keep the cottage warm, stacking logs by the stove and tending the fire carefully.
Despite what some might consider hardships, there was something beautiful about that simplicity—a kind of resourcefulness that shaped me. My mom would cook fresh fish or game that my dad and brother brought home, filling the kitchen with rich, earthy aromas that made every meal feel like a celebration. Those moments—gathered around home-cooked meals, warmed by firelight, and surrounded by family—are the ones I treasure most.
Luxury is Time Well Spent
Now, as life has changed, I realize that the ultimate luxury isn’t material—it’s the freedom to spend time the way I want. Whether it’s sitting quietly with a cup of coffee, soaking in a sunrise, or sharing laughter with loved ones, luxury is about presence, not possessions.
Luxury is Meaningful Connection
Spending time with my children, grandchildren, and the person I’ve reconnected with after 40 years brings me more joy than anything money can buy. These relationships—deep, enduring, and full of love—are the true definition of luxury.
Luxury is Finding Joy in Simple Things
While I appreciate the finer things in life, I will always hold onto the idea that true luxury is found in the moments that make life rich:
✔ A warm home filled with laughter. ✔ The taste of fresh, home-cooked food. ✔ The freedom to pause and appreciate the present. ✔ The love of family and the joy of shared stories.
Final Reflection: What’s Your Luxury?
Is luxury a thing, a feeling, or a memory? For me, it’s a combination of all three—a mix of simple comforts, cherished moments, and the people who make life meaningful.
What’s the one luxury you truly couldn’t live without?
