The Art of Losing Time (and Finding a Little Bit of Myself)

We all do it. That quiet slipping of hours into the ether. A scroll here, a snack there. One unfinished task morphing into five tabs open, and none getting done. I used to call it “wasting time.” Now, I’m starting to think it’s a little more complicated than that.

Most days, I lose the most time in the cracks between intention and distraction. I sit down to write—heart brimming with purpose—and somehow I end up alphabetizing my spice rack or reorganizing that one drawer I haven’t looked at since 2003. It’s magical, really. I can be so productive… at avoiding the very thing I promised myself I’d do.

And let’s not even talk about social media. “I’m just checking for messages,” I say, as twenty minutes disappear into Reels, Pinterest ideas I’ll never try, and blog posts about people who actually stick to routines. …don’t get me started on Facebook! Irony, party of one.

But maybe we’re not wasting time as much as we’re revealing where our hearts are heavy or our minds are tired. Sometimes, my distractions speak louder than my to-do list ever could. They whisper: rest. breathe. not yet.

Sure, I still want to be more efficient. I still want to honor my goals. But I’m learning to waste time more consciously—with a little more grace and a little less guilt. Because even in the pause, I’m still becoming.

How do you lose time each day—and what might it be trying to tell you?

🕯️ Quote

“Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.” — Bertrand Russell

Such a freeing reminder, right? That not every second must prove its worth.

🌿 “In the Quiet Waste”

Time trickles out like candle wax,

In moments I cannot account for— a glance at the sky,

A sigh I didn’t mean to hold,

The way light filters through and lands on nothing important.

But maybe these minutes,

The ones I thought were lost,

Were actually stitching something soft and sacred beneath the noise.

Maybe rest is also work.

Maybe stillness isn’t waste.
