Honoring Service, Preserving Memory: The Story of Hightower Memorial Garden

By Michelle Allen

Some legacies begin with a simple yet powerful gesture—one rooted in remembrance, love, and a desire to honor those who served. The Hightower Lake Veteran’s Memorial Garden at Hightower Lake in Newfield Township, Hesperia, Michigan, is one such story, shaped by the dedication and dreams of Melody Sukup.

It all began in 2018 when Melody’s daughter, Heather, visited from Texas. Heather, an Army Medic, carried with her the memory of a fallen friend—a fellow soldier whose sacrifice weighed heavily on her heart. During that visit, as Memorial Day approached, Heather shared her longing to do something in his honor. Melody understood the depth of that grief and agreed that a tribute to all soldiers—past, present, and fallen—would be a meaningful way to give back to the community.

What started as a quiet act of remembrance soon grew into something greater. Flowers were planted, signage was placed, and Heather’s Army friends sent donations to support the cause. The garden began humbly, but Melody and her husband continued adding to it each year, ensuring that the space reflected the honor and gratitude it was meant to convey. A flagpole and flag became the heart of the garden, standing tall in tribute.

Yet, as with any labor of love, challenges emerged. Some of the early flowers were stolen, prompting the installation of cameras. Although a green wire garden fence was placed around the space early on, Melody always envisioned a white picket fence that would better reflect the dignity and beauty of the tribute. Despite these setbacks, the garden grew, fueled by hard work and generosity.

Then, in early 2024, Melody was faced with another profound loss: her dear friend and neighbor, Vietnam veteran Michael Overla Sr., passed away in October 2023. His absence sparked a new vision—one that would create a lasting tribute to all who had served, were serving, or had given the ultimate sacrifice.

Thus, the Memorial Board was born. Melody shared her plans online, inviting community members to participate. The response was immediate. Jackie Slocum volunteered to inscribe each name, military branch, and key dates. JoAnn Replogle donated toward the plaques, and Michael Overla Jr. crafted the ironworks sign that now stands above them. Melanie Franklin added patriotic wind spinners, a shepherd’s hook, and a geranium basket, further enriching the space.

By March, families had the opportunity to add their loved ones’ names, ensuring that their service would be preserved for future generations. Melody worked diligently to stain and varnish the large board, preparing it to hold the plaques. Her husband, along with Dennis David and Doug Hren, mounted them, creating a tangible tribute to honor those remembered within the garden. Joan and Dennis David continued to provide support, always ready to lend a hand.

The Dedication Ceremony in 2024 was a profound moment for Melody and the community. The event followed official ranking protocol, beginning with Melody’s husband, Brian, who spoke about the journey of the garden. This was followed by a prayer led by the chaplain of the Hesperia American Legion Post 411. Next, speakers included Nancy Conley (Newfield Township Clerk), Joan David (Newfield Township Supervisor), and Paul Erickson (County Commissioner)—progressing in order from lowest to highest-ranking official, as is customary.

As the ceremony drew to a close, James Dow and his detail honored the occasion with a formal Three-Volley Salute, marking the solemn respect paid to those who have served and sacrificed.

The vision has only continued to evolve. May 2024 saw the addition of a bench, a trellis-arbor, a water fountain, and a Memorial Plaque carefully written by Melody and brought to life with artwork by Melanie Franklin.

Looking ahead, July will bring Christmas in July, a unique tribute where families will decorate a patriotic Christmas tree with ornaments bearing the names of soldiers they wish to honor. From July 3rd to July 20th, the tree will stand as a living tribute—a reminder that remembrance does not fade.

Later this summer, a decorative gate will be installed, further shaping the space into a lasting memorial. The garden, like its purpose, is not static—it is meant to be maintained, nurtured, and carried forward by future generations.

Melody’s vision, born from loss and love, has grown into something much larger than she could have imagined in 2018. One day, others will pick up the torch. But for now, the garden stands as a tribute to sacrifice, resilience, and the enduring strength of a community that remembers.

How Can the Community Support the Garden?

When asked how others can contribute to preserving the garden’s purpose, Melody’s response was simple:

“That would be us, Brian and Melody. But to be honest, you don’t get many now that the project is more or less completed. There’s no room for anything else in the garden—it’s a small area. We just keep it up, watering, maintaining, and ensuring it remains a place of honor.”

However, there is one final addition on the horizon—a decorative gate, already purchased and set to be installed this summer. While the garden’s transformation is nearly complete, its legacy remains an ongoing commitment.

For those who wish to offer support or simply learn more, reaching out directly to Melody and Brian is the best way to stay connected to the heart behind the project. The garden may now stand as a finished tribute, but its spirit will continue to grow through the dedication of those who care for it.
