On What Subject(s) Am I an Authority?

I used to bristle at the word authority. It sounded too rigid, too final. But I’ve come to understand that authority doesn’t mean you know everything—it means you’ve earned something. Through time. Through tears. Through showing up, again and again.

So what am I an authority on?

I am an authority on the power of a well-told story to breathe life into quiet places. I know what it is to chase ghosts through historical records, piecing together the echoes of lineage like a quilt sewn from memory and longing. I speak fluently in the language of small towns, of storefronts held up by grit and grace, of neighbors whose names are still spoken at potlucks and prayer circles.

I am an authority on widowhood, not because I wanted to be, but because loss carved itself into the architecture of my days. I’ve learned how grief can make you both softer and fiercer. I’ve laughed through tears, reframing the narrative not with denial but with deliberate hope.

I know the cadence of community—the way pride swells when a local wins, the ache when history fades unnoticed, the magic of turning “just an idea” into a movement. I have written my way through change, stitched together new beginnings with ink and persistence.

And maybe most importantly, I am an authority on listening. On hearing the stories between the lines, on holding space for someone else’s truth, even when it trembles.

That’s not all, and thank goodness for that. Because being an authority doesn’t mean I’ve stopped learning—it means I’ve begun sharing.

So now I’ll turn the question to you, dear reader: What lessons have you lived enough to speak on with authority? Whether it’s the art of resilience, the rhythm of caregiving, or the sacred rituals of Sunday suppers—your earned wisdom is worth sharing.

Drop it in the comments, write it in your journal, whisper it to someone who needs to hear it. Because authority, at its heart, is a story told from experience—and I believe in the power of yours.
