🎸Backbeats and Brainstorms: Working to the Rhythm of Rock

🎸 “Just like my grandpa,” she said—cradling that light blue guitar with the kind of quiet pride only love can pass down.
This is Rosalie—standing where music and memory meet. Wearing her pink top and patterned leggings, she holds the guitar not just in pose but in presence, echoing a man who loved her fiercely. Her grandpa, who passed in 2021, played guitar with heart and humility, and she still misses him terribly—my little rockstar, a song still being written.
It’s a moment that reminds me: some legacies don’t live in stone—they live in fingertips on strings, in voices that whisper “I’m still with you,” and in grandchildren who carry the rhythm forward.

“Music is the shorthand of emotion,” wrote Tolstoy—and I tend to agree, especially when my speakers are filled with the raw honesty of a Classic Rock anthem.

The hum of a guitar solo. The steady beat of drums that feel like a heartbeat. The raw, raspy truth in a voice that’s lived a thousand stories—there’s nothing like Classic Rock to stir something alive while I’m working.

When I sit down to write, especially for Whispering Willow, it’s often with the sounds of the ‘70s and ‘80s curling in the background. Fleetwood Mac floats in with mystical harmonies when I need focus. Tom Petty reminds me to keep going, even when the words feel stuck. And when energy is low, AC/DC gives my keyboard a pulse.

There’s something grounding about those songs—how they carry emotion, grit, and history. They connect me to dusty road trips, family cookouts, cassette tapes winding into memory. I’ve found that music doesn’t just influence how I work—it reminds me why I do it.

Whether I’m writing, organizing, or just sifting through ideas beneath the branches, it’s the soundtrack that keeps me grounded. Fleetwood Mac sends me floating into creative flow with every haunting harmony. Tom Petty reminds me to “keep on keeping on” when the words won’t quite land. Led Zeppelin, Heart, Boston—they’re not just artists, they’re architects of mood.

Sometimes, I feel like I’m living in a playlist titled “From Vinyl to Vision.” Rummy with my mom, Scrabble with Candy, Yahtzee at the kitchen table—all of those memories carry their own songs. And as I try to make sense of the world in new seasons of love and loss, I find myself reaching for those familiar riffs the way I might reach for a warm mug on a cold morning.

🫖 What’s on while you work? Are there tracks that settle you, energize you, or bring old joy back to the surface? Do certain songs awaken your creativity, steady your nerves, or anchor you in memory?

Drop a note or a favorite track—I’d love to add a few new rhythms to my rotation. And wherever today finds you—headphones on, windows open, or wrapped in silence—I hope you’re surrounded by sound that makes your spirit hum.

Whether it’s AC/DC charging your focus or James Taylor settling your soul, your soundtrack matters. It becomes a part of your process, a silent collaborator in the stories we write, the work we shape, the lives we rebuild.

Until next time, Michelle 🌳🎸☕🎶
