Grief Made Me Do It (and Other Completely Plausible Excuses)

Reflections from the Willow

They say grief comes in waves. But nobody warned me the waves would also crash into my Amazon cart at 2 a.m., leaving behind a glow-in-the-dark garden gnome named Reginald and three matching mugs that say “Don’t Talk to Me, I’m Mourning… or Just Not Caffeinated.”

Grief has made me eat cereal for dinner, cry during insurance commercials, and attempt yoga (badly). Once, I scheduled a therapy session, a DMV appointment, and a chiropractor appointment on the same day. Only one of those experiences was mildly fulfilling—and shocker, it wasn’t the DMV. Once, I almost downloaded a dating app—then settled for ice cream and an ‘80s rom-com instead. No regrets.

There’s something oddly liberating about admitting that yes, we’re grieving… but also living in the most gloriously messy way possible. Our coping strategies may range from journaling to binge-watching documentaries about squirrels (no judgment), but the fact that we’re still here—navigating, laughing, crying, wobbling forward—is something worth celebrating.

So here’s to the awkward smiles, the mismatched socks, the “Who even am I today?” mornings. Grief doesn’t take a break—but sometimes, it lets us find a little humor in the haze. And that laughter? That’s healing, too. With a wink from the Willow, —Michelle

If you’ve ever found yourself grieving in unexpected ways—buying something ridiculous, laughing when you least expected, or simply surviving one awkward moment at a time—know that you’re not alone. Grief doesn’t always follow a solemn script. Sometimes, it shows up in sweatpants, carrying snacks, and cracking jokes at the wrong time.

And that’s okay.

Because healing doesn’t mean being serious all the time. It means being real. And real looks different every day.

So whether you’ve impulse-bought a flamingo lamp, danced with your dog in the living room, or just made it through another Tuesday—that’s something worth honoring.

From my chaos to yours, With love and laughter from the Willow, —Michelle
