🌱 The Professions Behind All Professions

🌿What Profession Do You Admire Most—And Why?

By Michelle Allen
When I think about professions I admire, my mind doesn’t race to titles or paychecks. It settles quietly on people whose work becomes a quiet force for good—often unseen, but deeply felt.
If I had to choose one, I’d say: educators. Not just teachers in the classroom, but those who offer knowledge, encouragement, and possibility wherever they go—adult ed instructors, community mentors, librarians, art teachers, even the kind neighbor who teaches kids how to fix a bike tire on a Saturday afternoon.
I worked in adult, alternative, and community education for three decades. I watched firsthand how teaching isn’t just about facts—it’s about believing in people, especially those the world has overlooked or written off. And that belief changes lives.
What I admire most is the consistency of educators:
Their patience when a student needs the concept repeated four times.
Their creativity when budgets are tight but the goal remains bold.
Their ability to see potential not yet visible.
Their grit in staying the course—even when the system doesn’t make it easy.
Educators, in many forms, have helped me rediscover my voice. They’ve shaped how I host gatherings, build my business, and raise my children. And they remind me that legacy isn’t built in one act—it’s formed across moments, through heart-centered commitment that touches generations.
It takes someone truly special to be a teacher. Not everyone is wired to nurture, to hold space for mistakes, and to celebrate progress—no matter how small. But teachers do it daily. Their work is more than curriculum—it’s courage, kindness, and belief in others. They carry hope like a lantern, lighting the way for those still finding their own.
So here’s my quiet thank-you to every teacher—named or unnamed—whose work may never trend, but whose impact leaves a trail of light behind it.
It’s also worth asking: Where would other professions be without teachers?
Doctors, engineers, artists, chefs—even writers like me—all stand on the shoulders of those who took the time to teach us something. Every career begins with someone guiding, correcting, encouraging. Educators build the scaffolding for every other vocation to rise.
And learning doesn’t end when the classroom doors close. Lifelong learning is woven into all we do. Whether it’s trying a new recipe, learning how to host with heart, or finding the courage to lead a retreat, we’re all still students of life. Teachers remind us that growing isn’t something you age out of—it’s something you lean into, again and again.
