🌿 What Brings Me Peace

Daily writing prompt
Describe one habit that brings you joy.

By Michelle Allen

Peace, for me, doesn’t roar—it whispers. It lives in soft things: a cup of coffee on the front porch in Oklahoma or the deck of my back yard in Michigan, the hum of the kettle, the rhythm of stirring soup, the pages of a book passed down through generations. It lingers in the corners of the Willow Lodge, where stories exhale from the walls and wrap themselves around you like a woven shawl.

Peace is watching my grandchildren laugh with the same crooked smile their grandfather wore. It’s rediscovering our ancestry and finding comfort in the echoes of those who walked before us. It’s talking with fellow widows and realizing—we’re stronger than we thought. It’s Hesperia at sunrise, mist kissing the river, time slowing to a breath. Or the quiet hum of Oklahoma City: full of noise, yet somehow still peace.

Peace is poetry and party planning. It’s giving someone a reason to smile—through a recipe, a raffle, or a warm hello. And sometimes, peace shows up in the middle of the mess. In the reminder that healing isn’t neat… and joy isn’t always loud.

I don’t chase peace anymore. I welcome it when it wanders in.
