What I Can Control: A Lesson I Keep Learning

By Michelle Allen

There are seasons in life when everything feels loud. Expectations. Opinions. Deadlines. The weight of other people’s emotions. The pressure to keep up, show up, and somehow stay centered through it all.

Lately, I’ve been reminded—sometimes gently, sometimes not—that peace doesn’t come from managing the world around me. It comes from managing the world within me.

I came across a visual recently that stopped me in my tracks. It was simple: two circles. The outer ring listed everything outside my control—other people’s thoughts, actions, feelings, opinions. The inner circle held the things that are mine—my choices, my words, my reactions, my energy.

And at the bottom, the line that hit me hardest: “I am only ever in control of myself.”

It sounds obvious, but living it is another story.

Letting Go of What Isn’t Mine

I can’t control how someone interprets my intentions. I can’t control whether someone shows up the way I hoped they would. I can’t control the pace of someone else’s healing, growth, or understanding.

And honestly? Trying to control those things only leaves me exhausted and discouraged.

But I can choose how I respond. I can choose kindness without sacrificing boundaries. I can choose to pause instead of react. I can choose to protect my peace, even when the world around me feels chaotic.

Reclaiming What Is Mine

There’s a quiet kind of power in remembering what belongs to me:

  • My thoughts — the stories I tell myself, the beliefs I nurture.
  • My actions — the way I show up, even on the hard days.
  • My words — the tone I set, the truth I speak.
  • My ideas — the creativity I bring into the world.
  • My feelings — valid, real, and worth honoring.

When I focus on what I can control, I feel grounded again. I feel capable. I feel like myself.

A Practice, Not a Destination

This isn’t a lesson I learn once. It’s one I return to again and again—especially during busy seasons of school, business, mentoring, and life.

Every day gives me a new opportunity to choose where I place my energy. Every moment invites me to release what isn’t mine and reclaim what is.

And maybe that’s the real work of growth: Not controlling more, but controlling less—and doing it with intention.

If You Needed This Reminder Too

You’re not alone. We’re all navigating things we didn’t expect, carrying things we didn’t ask for, and learning to set things down that were never ours to hold.

Here’s to choosing peace. Here’s to choosing ourselves. Here’s to focusing on the small circle—the one that actually belongs to us.
