Choosing Yourself: The Courage to Walk Away and Step Into Your Truth

Four years ago, I found myself asking, “Is this really all there is?”

For over 30 years, I worked in a position I loved—one I thought I’d retire from. I dedicated my career to alternative and adult education students and community enrichment programs, pouring my heart into the very school that shaped me. But life had other plans. Budget cuts eliminated the program, leaving me heartbroken and lost.

Out of necessity, I pivoted, taking a job in the courts as a collections clerk. It was stable, secure. But fulfillment? That was gone.

Then, another unexpected shift—one that rocked the foundation of my life. I lost my husband. Suddenly, I wasn’t just navigating job uncertainty—I was navigating the immense void of grief and the reality of being alone.

But in that solitude, something remarkable happened. I reconnected with my high school sweetheart. For a year, we nurtured a long-distance relationship, proof that love and healing find their way back when you least expect them.

And while my heart found new hope, my work drained me even further. My role changed without warning—micromanagement, stress, anxiety. Severe, debilitating back pain became my daily reality, stealing the energy and enthusiasm I once had. I took a medical leave, hoping for relief. But the truth became clear: It wasn’t my body that needed healing. It was my soul.

So I made a decision. A bold one. A freeing one. I walked away.

I chose myself. My well-being. My future. I cleared out my savings, signed up for college classes to finally complete my business management degree, and traveled to be with the love who had reminded me that life is meant to be lived.

And something remarkable happened. The stress? Gone. The anxiety? Gone. The crushing pain? Gone. In its place? Freedom. Creativity. Joy.

I picked up a pen and started writing again—something I had always loved but never truly shared. Poetry poured out of me, followed by the spark of something even bigger: a fantasy mythology-inspired adventure love story.

For the first time in years, I felt alive. Not just surviving—thriving. Because I finally listened to the quiet voice inside me that had been whispering for years:

“You are meant for more. There is more waiting for you.”

So, here’s what I want you to hear:

✨ Never let fear, comfort, or expectation keep you from the life that calls to you. ✨

✨ When your heart whispers that it’s time for change—listen.

✨ You are capable of creating a life where you feel aligned, fulfilled, and free.

So tell me—have you ever felt that nudge? The feeling that you’re meant for something bigger?

Drop a “YES” in the comments if you’ve felt it too. Because trust me—your story is just beginning.
