They say a name carries a storyāand if thatās true, then a nickname carries a whole novel.
When I was little, I couldnāt quite wrap my mouth around the letter āM.ā So instead of Michelle or Mickey, I became KiKi. It stuck around for a whileāsweet, simple, and entirely my own. That nickname was like a soft childhood blanket: familiar, innocent, and a little giggly.
Later, I graduated to Miki (or Mickey)āa nickname that danced between playful and practical. It was easy to say, easy to remember, and just quirky enough to feel like mine. If you called out “Miki” across a crowded room, Iād probably turn around with a smileāand maybe a wink.
But then came one I never saw coming: Stick. That one was courtesy of my husband. I donāt know where it came fromāmaybe a movie he watched, maybe a moment that stuck (pun intended). What I do know is it had nothing to do with me being skinny! āStickā became one of those endearing, random nicknames that made no logical sense but carried heart, humor, and a lot of love.
Nicknames are funny that way. They arrive unexpectedly, stay indefinitely, and sometimes tell the most honest stories about who we areāor who others see us to be. They mark chapters in our lives: childhood mispronunciations, teenage reinventions, inside jokes with loved ones, and silly titles that become badges of affection.
So now I ask you: Whatās the story behind your nickname? Was it a name whispered by a parent, coined by a friend, or lovingly misused by a toddler? And does it still echo in your heart, even now?
Drop it in the comments. Iād love to hear your storiesāthe real ones, the ridiculous ones, and the ones that only make sense in your world.
Because behind every nickname⦠thereās a bit of magic.
āNicknames stick to people, and the most ridiculous are the most adhesive.ā ā Thomas C. Haliburton
