🌿 Words We Wear Out

By Michelle Allen

There’s a word I hear constantly—thrown around in casual conversation, posted as captions, sprinkled in texts, and even used in marketing.

“Busy.”

We use it to explain, deflect, justify, and connect. We wear it like armor, almost proudly.

“I’ve been so busy.” “Sorry, I’m just busy right now.” “Life is busy, you know how it goes.”

But what if we paused to consider what we’re really trying to say? That we’re tired? Overwhelmed? Lost in the demands of modern life? That we’re craving more spaciousness but don’t feel like we’re allowed to ask for it?

I wonder if “busy” has become a placeholder—when what we really need is presence, peace, or even permission to just say no. To be still. To prioritize our values over our calendars.

I’m learning to ask myself: Am I truly busy? Or am I avoiding something deeper?

Maybe next time we feel tempted to use that word, we can choose something more honest. Or just pause. Or say: “I’ve been holding a lot right now, but I’m trying to make space for what matters.”

Because worn-out words sometimes point to worn-out souls. And we deserve rest, not just routines.

  1. Busy is an excuse sometimes to not deal with issues that are difficult.
