🌿 What If the Mission Was Never to Find Yourself?

My friend Melissa said something this morning that has been echoing in my heart ever since. One of those simple, piercing truths that stops you mid‑stride and makes you breathe a little deeper.

She said:

“What if the mission wasn’t — isn’t — to find yourself? What if the mission is to find God?”

And I haven’t been able to shake it.

For so long, we’re told that life is a journey of self‑discovery. That the goal is to figure out who we are, what we want, what we’re made of. And there’s nothing wrong with that — but sometimes that path can feel exhausting. Like we’re digging through layers of expectations, mistakes, old wounds, and shifting identities, hoping to uncover some final, polished version of ourselves.

But what if that was never the point?

🌱 What if the mission has always been to find God instead?

To look for Him in the quiet places. To listen for Him in the stillness. To seek Him in the middle of our confusion, our questions, our becoming.

Because when we start with God — when we anchor ourselves in who He is — something shifts. The pressure eases. The striving softens. The mission becomes less about discovering ourselves and more about remembering Whose we are.

And somehow, that makes everything a little clearer.

🌤️ Finding God makes finding yourself less complicated

When we seek God first, we begin to see ourselves through His eyes — not the distorted mirrors the world holds up, not the labels we’ve carried, not the stories we’ve outgrown.

We see:

  • A beloved child
  • A work in progress
  • A vessel with purpose
  • A soul shaped by grace

And suddenly, the mission doesn’t feel so heavy.

Because if God is the One who created us, then maybe the truest version of ourselves is found in Him, not apart from Him.

🍃 Maybe the mission becomes easier when we stop trying to be our own compass

Maybe we don’t have to figure everything out. Maybe we don’t have to untangle every knot. Maybe we don’t have to “find ourselves” before we can live with purpose.

Maybe we just have to seek Him — honestly, humbly, consistently — and trust that He will reveal what we need to know, when we need to know it.

🌾 So here’s the question I’m sitting with today

What if the mission of this season — not forever, not for the next decade, just right now — is simply to find God in the middle of your life?

In the ordinary moments. In the quiet whispers. In the unexpected conversations. In the places where you feel lost. In the places where you feel found.

Because maybe, just maybe, when we find Him… we finally begin to find ourselves too.

One response to “🌿 What If the Mission Was Never to Find Yourself?”

  1. This is a beautifully reflective and deeply grounding meditation. The way a single, simple question opens into such a spacious, compassionate exploration of faith feels both honest and gentle—never forced, never heavy. It invites rather than instructs, which is rare and powerful.

I especially love how you honor the idea of self-discovery without dismissing it, then lovingly reframe it as something lighter and more grace-filled. The shift from finding yourself to remembering Whose you are is quietly profound, and it lingers long after reading.
