The Story Behind My Middle Name

Daily writing prompt
What is your middle name? Does it carry any special meaning/significance?

By Michelle Allen

My middle name is Kaye, a small and simple name that carries a surprising amount of history. It’s short for Katherine, the middle name of my grandmother, Marguerite Katherine — a woman whose quiet strength still echoes through our family. When I had my daughter, I passed that name on to her as well, continuing a generational thread that feels both intentional and deeply personal.

What I love most is that Kaye isn’t just a name; it has meaning. Because it comes from Katherine, its truest root meaning is “pure.” But the name also carries other beautiful interpretations from its Welsh, Latin, and Old English connections — meanings like “rejoice” and even the poetic idea that “she holds the keys.”

In many ways, those meanings feel fitting for the women in my family: strong, joyful, steady, and quietly holding things together.

My mom also had a naming system — one she never announced or explained, but followed faithfully with each child. She named us:

  • Candace Rae
  • Robert Loretaus (after my dad’s middle name)
  • Lynette Mae
  • Michelle Kaye

Her pattern was simple but clever: She took the first initial of one child’s middle name and used it as the first letter of the next child’s first name.

  • Robert LoretausLynette
  • Lynette MaeMichelle

It’s the kind of detail you don’t fully appreciate until you’re older — when you start tracing roots, noticing patterns, and realizing how much love and creativity parents quietly tuck into the choices they make.

For me, “Kaye” is more than a middle name. It’s a link — to my grandmother, to my mother’s thoughtful naming tradition, to my siblings, and now to my daughter. A small inheritance, carried forward one generation at a time.
