🌿✨ Still the One

Daily writing prompt
What’s a song that always puts you in a good mood?

By Michelle Allen

There are a thousand songs that can lift a mood — the ones that make you dance in the kitchen, the ones that make you roll down the car windows, the ones that make you forget you ever had a bad day. But every once in a while, there’s a song that doesn’t just make you smile… it makes your heart smile.

For me, that song is “Still the One” by Orleans.

Not because it’s catchy (though it is). Not because it’s nostalgic (though it definitely is). But because it feels like someone took my story — our story — and tucked it between the chords.

There’s something magical about a love that circles back. A love that doesn’t rush or demand or insist on being understood. A love that simply waits in the quiet corners of your life until the timing finally catches up.

That’s what it felt like with Dan.

We weren’t together all these years. Life had its own plans, its own detours, its own way of scattering us into different chapters. But when we reconnected, it was as if time had been holding its breath — like it had paused somewhere in the background, tapping its foot, waiting for us to notice that the story wasn’t finished.

And when we finally stepped back into each other’s lives, it wasn’t dramatic or complicated. It was… familiar. Easy. Like slipping into your favorite sweatshirt — the one that still smells like a memory you never quite let go of.

It felt like picking up a conversation we started decades ago and somehow never stopped having.

It felt like home.

So when that song comes on — the one that says you’re still the one I run to, the one I belong to — I can’t help but smile. Because if life handed me a do‑over, a rewind button, a chance to choose again… I’d still choose him. Every time. In every version of my life. In every universe where two people find their way back to each other.

Some loves fade. Some loves change shape. And some loves — the rare ones — stay quietly lit, like a porch light left on for someone who wandered a little too far but always meant to come home.

He’s still the one. And somehow, after all these years, I am still his.

And that, more than anything, puts me in the best mood.

🌙 Closing Reflection

In a world full of almosts, maybes, and might‑have‑beens, it still amazes me how some hearts find their way back — not by force, not by searching, but by a quiet gravity that never really let go. Maybe that’s the real magic of love: not the fireworks, not the grand gestures, but the simple truth that when the timing is finally right, the soul recognizes what it always knew.

Some people are chapters. Some are whole books. And some — the rare ones — are the story you return to, even after years of living in the margins.

Here’s to the ones who remain steady in the background of our lives, waiting for the moment we finally look up and realize… they were still the one all along.
