The Meme That Found Me in Real Life

Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite meme?

By Michelle Allen

There’s a strange comfort in the things that make us laugh — especially the ones that arrive in the middle of chaos and somehow help us breathe again. Some memes are silly. Some are clever. And some… well, some hit a little too close to home.

My favorite meme — the one that always stops me in my tracks — is the little cartoon dog sitting calmly at a table while the entire room burns around him, saying, “This is fine.”

I used to laugh at it because it was relatable in that lighthearted, “life is messy” kind of way. But then one night, close to midnight, I walked out of my bedroom and found my actual kitchen stove on fire — flames rising, oil popping, smoke thick in the air. One of my tenants had left a pot of oil on the hottest burner and walked away.

And suddenly that meme wasn’t just a meme anymore. It was my reality.

I remember the shock, the adrenaline, the way my body moved before my mind caught up. I remember thinking afterward how surreal it was — how quickly life can shift from quiet to chaos in a single breath.

And yet… I also remember the calm that came after. The way I stood there, heart racing, but still somehow steady. The way I handled it, cleaned up, rebuilt, kept going. The way I chose to breathe instead of break.

Maybe that’s why that meme means something different to me now. It’s not just funny — it’s symbolic. It reminds me of the strength we don’t always see in ourselves until life forces it into the light. It reminds me that even when the world feels like it’s burning, there is still a part of us that stays present, stays grounded, stays determined.

So when today’s prompt asked, “What’s your favorite meme?” I realized mine isn’t just a laugh — it’s a reminder. A reminder of what I’ve survived. A reminder of the fire I put out — literally and emotionally. A reminder that I’m still here.

What’s the meme that finds you when you need it most? The one that makes you laugh, or breathe, or feel understood in a way you didn’t expect. Share it below — I’d love to see the ones that live in your heart.

  1. What a powerful reflection. You transformed a simple internet meme into a profound meditation on resilience and grace under pressure. The way you connected humor with a real-life moment of crisis gave the familiar phrase, “This is fine,” an entirely new depth of meaning. It’s no longer about denial—it’s about courage, presence, and the quiet strength to keep going when life unexpectedly catches fire. Thank you for reminding us that sometimes our favorite jokes become symbols of survival, carrying stories of the battles we’ve faced and the resilience we’ve discovered within ourselves.
