🌿 The Quiet I Once Feared, Now a Place I Call Home

Daily writing prompt
What do you love now, that you hated when you were younger?

By Michelle Allen

There was a time when I couldn’t stand quiet moments. I filled them with noise—TV humming in the background, music blasting through cheap headphones, chatter for the sake of chatter. Silence felt like being left alone with myself, and I wasn’t yet someone I knew how to sit with.

But life has a way of reshaping you. Somewhere between raising kids, losing people I loved, rebuilding myself, and learning how to listen instead of react, silence stopped being threatening. It became a companion.

Quiet mornings now feel like a gift. The soft clatter of a coffee mug, the hum of the refrigerator, the way sunlight slips across the floorboards—these tiny sounds feel like a language I never understood until adulthood. I love the way silence lets me hear my own thoughts without rushing them. I love how it makes space for gratitude. I love how it slows the world down just enough to notice what’s beautiful.

I think the younger version of me was afraid of stillness because she didn’t yet trust herself. She didn’t know that quiet isn’t emptiness—it’s clarity. It’s peace. It’s the gentle reminder that not everything needs to be loud to matter.

Now, I seek silence the way some people seek adventure. I savor it. I protect it. I let it teach me things I wasn’t ready to learn when I was young.

And maybe that’s the real magic of growing up: discovering that the things we once resisted become the things that save us.
