🌿 The Geography of My Heart

Daily writing prompt
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

By Michelle Allen

There’s a certain magic in imagining a life somewhere else — not out of dissatisfaction, but out of curiosity. Travel has a way of widening the heart, and sometimes the places we visit (or dream of visiting) linger long after we’ve returned home.

If I could live anywhere in the world, I think I’d choose a place shaped by both beauty and rhythm — a place where daily life feels like a gentle adventure.

Maybe it’s a quiet village on the western coast of Ireland, where the cliffs meet the sea and the fog rolls in like an old friend. I can imagine mornings spent writing near a window that overlooks green hills, evenings warmed by the hum of a pub where everyone knows your name.

Or perhaps it’s a sun‑washed town in Portugal — somewhere with terracotta rooftops, narrow cobblestone streets, and bakeries that open before dawn. A place where life moves slowly, where the ocean is always close, and where the scent of fresh bread and citrus drifts through the air.

There’s a part of me that dreams of the mountains too — maybe the Swiss Alps or the Canadian Rockies — where the world feels vast and grounding at the same time. A place where the horizon reminds you to breathe deeper.

And sometimes my imagination drifts even farther — to places that feel almost mythic. I think of Machu Picchu, that ancient city in the clouds, where the air feels thin and sacred and every stone seems to hum with history. I imagine waking to mist that curls around the mountains like a whispered secret, spending slow afternoons wandering terraces built by hands that understood both earth and sky. Or maybe I’d choose a quiet life by the oceanside — somewhere warm and salt‑kissed, where the tide becomes a kind of companion. A place where mornings begin with the hush of waves, where evenings glow gold, and where life feels both expansive and deeply simple at once.

And yet, another part of me knows that “anywhere” doesn’t have to be far away. Sometimes the perfect place is simply wherever you can write your stories, cook your meals, love your people, and feel at peace. Travel teaches us that home is both a location and a feeling — and we carry that feeling with us wherever we go.

So if I could live anywhere in the world, I’d choose a place that feels like possibility. A place where the world feels wide, where curiosity is rewarded, and where every sunrise feels like an invitation to explore.
