🌿 The Hard Years — And the Quiet Strength That Carried Me

Daily writing prompt
What’s a chapter of your life you’d title "The Hard Years" — and what got you through it?

By Michelle Allen

Every life has chapters you can name without hesitation. Some are soft and golden. Some are messy and complicated. And some… some you only survive by putting one foot in front of the other. If I had to title one chapter of my life The Hard Years, I know exactly which season it would be — the one where everything felt heavier than it should, and yet somehow I kept going anyway.

🌑 What Those Years Felt Like

They were the years when life asked more of me than I had to give. The years when grief didn’t knock — it just walked in and sat down. The years when I was holding up a household, holding up other people, and trying to hold myself together at the same time. The years when I woke up tired, went to bed tired, and still had to show up again the next morning.

They were the years that changed me. Not all at once, but slowly — the way water shapes stone.

🌤 What Got Me Through

When I look back now, I can see the small, steady things that carried me through those hard years. Not grand gestures. Not dramatic breakthroughs. Just quiet anchors.

  • My people — the ones who didn’t need me to be strong to stay.
  • My faith — sometimes whispered, sometimes questioned, but always present.
  • My writing — the place where I could tell the truth without fear of being too much.
  • My resilience — the kind you don’t notice until you look back and realize you survived what once felt impossible.
  • My grandchildren — their laughter, their tiny hands, their reminders that life keeps offering new beginnings.

And somewhere in the middle of all that heaviness, I learned how to choose myself — slowly, imperfectly, but consistently.

🌱 What Those Years Taught Me

The Hard Years taught me that breaking isn’t the end of the story. It’s the beginning of becoming someone new.

They taught me that healing doesn’t look like a straight line — it looks like progress, pause, progress again. They taught me that starting over at any age is not a failure. It’s a declaration. They taught me that I can carry heavy things and still grow lighter inside.

And they taught me that even the hardest chapters have a purpose — not because pain is noble, but because survival is.

🌟 The Chapter After

If The Hard Years were one chapter, the next one would be called Becoming — the slow rise after the fall. The part where I learned to breathe again. The part where joy returned in small, unexpected ways. The part where I realized I wasn’t just surviving anymore.

I was living.

And maybe that’s the quiet gift of the hardest seasons: they don’t just break you. They build you into someone you never imagined you could be.

🌿 The One Who Held Me Up — Even From 1,000 Miles Away

When I look back at The Hard Years, there’s one name that rises above the noise, one presence that steadied me when everything else felt unsteady: Dan. If that chapter of my life had margins, his name would be written in every one of them.

Not because he swooped in with grand gestures. Not because he had all the answers. But because he stayed — even when he was a thousand miles away, even when he was struggling too, even when life was heavy for both of us.

🌑 When I Was Breaking, He Didn’t Look Away

Those years were hard on me in ways I didn’t always say out loud. I was stretched thin, carrying more than anyone realized, trying to be strong for everyone else while quietly falling apart inside. And Dan… he saw it. He didn’t pretend not to. He didn’t ask me to “be okay.” He didn’t minimize what I felt.

He simply stayed present.

He listened to the cracks in my voice. He steadied me when I couldn’t steady myself. He reminded me that I wasn’t alone, even when loneliness felt like a second skin.

🌤 What He Did That Saved Me

It wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t cinematic. It was real.

  • He showed up emotionally — even from Oklahoma, even when the miles felt impossible.
  • He shared his own struggles honestly, which made me feel less ashamed of mine.
  • He held space for me, even on days when he barely had space for himself.
  • He believed in me, especially when I didn’t believe in myself.
  • He made me feel chosen, not out of convenience, but out of truth.

We were two people carrying heavy things — but somehow, we carried each other too.

🌱 The Strength We Gave Each Other

What I love most about that chapter is that the support wasn’t one‑sided. We held each other up. We leaned when we needed to. We lifted when we could. We were honest about the hard parts, the messy parts, the parts that didn’t look pretty from the outside.

We didn’t pretend life was easy. We didn’t pretend we were perfect. We didn’t pretend we didn’t need each other.

And that honesty became its own kind of healing.

🌟 The Quiet Miracle of Distance

People talk about long‑distance love like it’s fragile, but ours wasn’t. The miles didn’t weaken us — they clarified us. They forced us to communicate, to trust, to be intentional. They taught us that presence isn’t always physical. Sometimes it’s emotional, spiritual, steady in ways that geography can’t touch.

Dan was my constant. My grounding. My reminder that love can be both soft and strong at the same time.

Even now, he continues to be that steady presence — through his own pain, his own battles, his own quiet storms. We support each other in ways that feel like a promise: I’m here. Even when it’s hard. Even when you’re far. Even when life is heavy.

🌾 The Chapter After

If The Hard Years were defined by struggle, the chapter after them is defined by us — by the way we learned to hold each other up, by the way we grew through the hard parts instead of around them, by the way love became a place to rest instead of another thing to carry.

And maybe that’s the real miracle: Not that I survived those years… but that someone loved me through them.
