🌙 What Is Meant for You Finds Its Way Back

Daily writing prompt
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

By Michelle Allen

There’s a piece of advice my mother gave me that has followed me through every season of my life — a quiet, steady truth wrapped in an old German phrase. She offered it to me during a time when my heart felt like it was unraveling thread by thread.

Dan had just left for Oklahoma, chasing work and whatever wild horizon was calling him then. And I stayed behind in Michigan, holding onto a love that suddenly felt too fragile to carry. We talked for a while after he left, but even in the warmth of those conversations, I could feel the distance widening — the way he was out in the world, “sewing his oats,” drifting into a life that didn’t have room for us.

One evening, when the ache was too heavy to hide, my mother touched my hand and said softly:

“Was für dich ist, kriegst du.” Who’s for you, you’ll get.

I didn’t understand it then. I didn’t want fate or patience or destiny. I wanted him — right then, right there, in the shape of the future I had imagined.

My mom and I on my graduation day months before she would give me the advice of a lifetime of love lost and found

But love has its own tides. Its own constellations. Its own way of circling back when the heart is ready.

Years passed. We lived separate stories, carried separate joys, healed separate wounds. And then — without warning, without effort, without the old ache — the universe folded us gently back toward each other. Not in a dramatic rush, but in a soft, familiar way… like two souls recognizing a place they once called home.

When we reconnected, it felt like stepping into a room where the light had been left on for us all along.

And suddenly, my mother’s words weren’t just comfort. They were prophecy.

What is meant for you will find you. Who is for you will return — in the right moment, in the right way, in the right lifetime.

Love doesn’t always arrive when you ask for it. But it arrives when your heart has grown enough to hold it.
