If I’m being completely honest, there are two days that come to mind.
One is the crossroads after high school when Dan and I faced decisions that would take us in different directions for a while.
The other is our senior prom.
To anyone else, it was probably just another high school dance. But to me, it felt magical. We were young, carefree, and convinced that love could conquer anything. Looking back at old photos, I can’t help but smile at the two teenagers staring back at me. We thought we had everything figured out.
Of course, we didn’t.
Life had other plans.
There would be years apart, challenges we couldn’t imagine, lessons we hadn’t yet learned, and separate paths that would eventually lead us back together.
That’s why I’d love to relive that night. Not because it was perfect, and not because I’d want to change what happened afterward.
I’d relive it because, for one evening, the future was still unwritten. Every dream seemed possible. Every road was still open.
And now, with the benefit of hindsight, I’d love to whisper to those two young people: “Don’t worry. Life is going to be messy, complicated, and sometimes painful. But one day you’ll understand that even the detours had a purpose.”
The funny thing is, if our lives had unfolded exactly the way we planned that night, we might never have become the people we are today. We certainly wouldn’t have the wonderful children and experiences that shaped us along the way.
So if I could go back, I wouldn’t stay there forever.
I’d simply spend one more evening appreciating a moment that seemed ordinary at the time but became priceless with age.
