If You Had to Get a Tattoo Right Now, What Would It Be and Why?

If you had to get a tattoo right now, what would it be and why?
At this stage in life, I don’t need a tattoo to remind me of those values, but if I ever wore one, a hummingbird and hibiscus would tell my story perfectly

By Michelle Allen

At 62 years old, I never thought much about tattoos. In fact, if you had asked me this question twenty years ago, I probably would have laughed and said, “Not a chance.”

But if I had to get one right now, it would be a hummingbird with a hibiscus flower.

The hummingbird has always fascinated me. It’s tiny, yet incredibly strong and resilient. Despite its size, it migrates long distances, adapts to changing seasons, and seems to approach life with endless energy and curiosity. There is something inspiring about a creature that can hover in place, move forward, backward, and sideways, all while making it look effortless.

The hibiscus flower would be the perfect companion. Its bright, vibrant blooms remind me of beauty, growth, and the importance of enjoying the present moment. The flower doesn’t last forever, but while it’s here, it commands attention and brings joy.

Together, the hummingbird and hibiscus represent a lesson I’ve come to appreciate more with age: life is both fragile and beautiful. We don’t have to be the biggest or the strongest to leave an impact. Sometimes, simply showing up every day with resilience, grace, and a little bit of wonder is enough.

Would I actually get the tattoo? Probably not. My skin has made it this far without any artwork, and I’m inclined to let it finish the journey that way. But if I were ever convinced to sit in a tattoo artist’s chair, a hummingbird hovering near a hibiscus flower would be my choice without a second thought.

It’s a symbol of endurance, joy, and finding beauty in every season of life.

  1. I would tattoo some cool hand and arm jewelry. It would be in the design of one of those beaded piece I like so much that slip over a finger or a toe, and then travels up to a few circles of beads around your wrist or your ankle. And maybe a high arm tattoo that look like the snake I used to wear when I had young film upper arms. I would get some permanent jewelry, that’s for sure. And what about a ring, on my right hand middle finger where no ring sits right now, to sister tattoo with my daughter. But I would get the women’s symbol. OK, I think that’s enough tattoos now.

    1. What wonderful ideas! I especially love the thought of a matching tattoo with your daughter. The women’s symbol would be both meaningful and personal. Your permanent jewelry concept sounds beautiful too, like wearing your favorite accessories without ever having to take them off. Thanks for sharing such a creative answer! 😊💜
