From Homebody to Explorer: How Travel Became My Newest Hobby

Share a hobby you’ve picked up recently — what got you into it?

By Michelle Allen

I’ve always been someone with plenty of hobbies. Reading, writing, drawing, painting, and embroidery have filled my free time for years. They’re all hobbies that allow me to be creative while staying in the comfort of my own space, which suited me perfectly because I’ve never been much of an adventurer.

Recently, though, I’ve picked up a hobby that is very different from the others: traveling.

For most of my life, I rarely ventured beyond my hometown and the surrounding area. It’s not that I didn’t want to. In fact, seeing new places and exploring different parts of the world was something I often dreamed about. The idea of traveling excited me, but actually taking that first step felt overwhelming. It was easier to stay where everything was familiar.

That changed when I reconnected with Dan.

Dan has always had a sense of adventure that I admire. His encouragement and enthusiasm inspired me to start saying “yes” to opportunities I would have previously talked myself out of. Little by little, I began stepping outside my comfort zone and discovering that there was a whole world waiting beyond the places I knew.

Over the last four years, I’ve visited places I probably never would have considered seeing if it weren’t for his influence. Some trips were carefully planned, while others were more spontaneous, but each one gave me something valuable. I’ve experienced new cultures, seen incredible landscapes, and created memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

What I love most about traveling is that every journey teaches me something new. Sometimes it’s about the destination itself, and sometimes it’s about myself. I’ve learned that I am far more capable and adventurous than I once believed. I’ve discovered confidence in navigating unfamiliar places and found joy in experiences that would have seemed intimidating a few years ago.

While I still love curling up with a good book, working on a piece of embroidery, or spending time painting, travel has become another creative outlet in its own way. It broadens my perspective, sparks new ideas, and gives me endless inspiration for my other hobbies.

I never expected traveling to become one of my favorite hobbies, but I’m grateful it has. What started with a little encouragement has turned into a passion for exploring, learning, and embracing new experiences. And while I may never be the most fearless traveler, I’ve learned that sometimes the greatest adventures begin with simply being willing to take that first step.

  1. What a beautiful and inspiring reflection, Michelle! 🌍❤️

I loved how you described the transformation from someone who was comfortable with familiar surroundings into someone who discovered the joy of travel. Your story is a wonderful reminder that sometimes we don’t need to change who we are—we simply need someone to encourage us to discover another side of ourselves.
