Have You Ever Regretted Reading a Book?

Have you ever regretted reading a book — which one and why?

By Michelle Allen

It’s a question that feels almost sacrilegious to ask book lovers.

We’re encouraged to believe that every book teaches us something, broadens our perspective, or enriches our understanding of the world. And while I generally agree, I’ve come to realize that not every reading experience is a positive one.

Yes, I’ve regretted reading a book.

Not because it challenged me. Not because it presented ideas I disagreed with. Those are often the books that teach us the most.

What I regret are the books that leave me feeling that my time was poorly invested.

For me, regret usually falls into one of three categories:

1. A Book That Overpromised and Underdelivered

We’ve all encountered books surrounded by hype. Glowing reviews. Bestseller lists. Recommendations from people we trust.

Sometimes the reality doesn’t match the promise.

The disappointment isn’t that the book was objectively bad. It’s that the expectations were so high that the actual value felt surprisingly low.

2. A Book That Repeats One Idea for 300 Pages

This is especially common in some business and self-development books.

A powerful concept can often be explained in a single chapter, yet it gets stretched into an entire book through repeated stories, anecdotes, and examples. Halfway through, I find myself thinking, “I got the point 150 pages ago.”

The regret isn’t the message. It’s the inefficiency.

3. A Book That Left Me Worse Off

Occasionally, a book promotes ideas that feel manipulative, misleading, or intellectually dishonest.

In those cases, I don’t regret being exposed to a different perspective. I regret spending hours engaging with an argument that was built on weak reasoning or questionable assumptions.

That said, even these books can be valuable. They sharpen our critical thinking and remind us to question what we read rather than accept it at face value.

Maybe “Regret” Isn’t the Right Word

The older I get, the less I view reading as a search for perfect books and the more I see it as part of a larger learning journey.

Some books inspire us.

Some books educate us.

Some books disappoint us.

And a few books teach us exactly what we don’t want to read again.

Perhaps there are no completely wasted books, only varying levels of return on the time we invest in them.

Still, if I’m being honest, there are books I’d happily trade back for the hours I spent reading them.

Now I’m curious:

Have you ever regretted reading a book? Which one, and why?
