People often ask us how Dan and I manage to travel so often without breaking the bank. Our biggest budget travel tip is simple: be prepared before you leave home.
We love spontaneous trips and often decide to hit the road on the fly. Because of that, we keep our travel essentials ready to go. We pack our own coffee, water, snacks, and easy meals for the road. Not only does this save money, but it also saves time by cutting down on unnecessary stops.
Road trip food can add up quickly. A few convenience store stops, fast food meals, and specialty coffees can easily cost more than a tank of gas. By bringing our own supplies, we’re able to spend that money on experiences instead.
We also make the most of rewards programs. I regularly use coupons when available, and I take advantage of my Choice Rewards points and Capital One Venture card rewards to reduce lodging and travel expenses. Those points may seem small at first, but they add up over time and can make a big difference when planning a getaway.
For us, budget travel isn’t about sacrificing fun. It’s about being intentional with our spending so we can travel more often, explore new places, and enjoy the journey without worrying about every dollar.
A little preparation, a cooler full of snacks, and a good rewards program have helped us create countless adventures while staying within budget.
