I don’t live in a city. I live in the small rural village of Hesperia, Michigan. When most people think about community challenges, they often picture problems in large urban areas. But some of those same struggles exist in small towns too, including one issue that I believe would make an immediate difference if it were addressed: safe, affordable housing.
Homelessness and housing insecurity are often viewed as big-city problems, but rural communities face them as well. The difference is that they’re often less visible. In a small town, someone experiencing homelessness may be staying with relatives, sleeping in a vehicle, moving from couch to couch, or living in unsafe conditions rather than sleeping on a downtown sidewalk.
Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Housing provides more than just shelter. It creates stability for families, supports mental and physical health, helps children succeed in school, and gives people a foundation from which to build their lives.
In communities like Hesperia, affordable housing options can be limited. Rising costs, aging homes, and a shortage of available rentals can leave residents with few choices. For those facing financial hardship, a medical emergency, job loss, or unexpected expense can quickly lead to housing instability.
Addressing housing needs would have a ripple effect throughout the community. Families would feel more secure. Local employers would have an easier time attracting and retaining workers. Schools would see greater stability among students. Community organizations could focus more resources on helping people thrive rather than simply helping them survive.
What I love most about small-town living is the sense of community. Neighbors help neighbors. People come together when someone is struggling. But compassion alone cannot solve a housing shortage. Communities also need investment, planning, and resources that ensure everyone has access to safe, stable housing.
If I could instantly improve one thing about my community, it would be creating more safe and affordable housing opportunities for those who need them. A home is more than a roof over someone’s head. It’s dignity, security, and hope for the future.
After all, a strong community isn’t measured by its size. It’s measured by how well it cares for the people who call it home.
