If I had to choose one relationship that has taught me the most about myself, it would be my relationship with my daughter. As parents, we often believe our role is to teach, guide, and prepare our children for life. What I never expected was how much I would learn from her along the way.
Now, at 62 years old, I find myself watching my daughter navigate one of the most difficult seasons of her life. As a mother of two beautiful children on the autism spectrum, she faces challenges that many people will never fully understand. Recently, she made the courageous decision to leave an unhealthy marriage and begin rebuilding her life. Today, she and her children are living with me while she works toward creating a stable and independent future for her family.
Watching her journey has reminded me of the values I worked so hard to instill in her growing up: strength, determination, resilience, independence, and self-worth. Seeing those qualities emerge during such a challenging time fills me with pride. While no parent wants to see their child struggle, there is something profoundly powerful about witnessing them rise, persevere, and refuse to give up.
My daughter has taught me that true strength is not the absence of hardship. Strength is finding the courage to start over when circumstances are difficult. It is choosing what is best for yourself and your children, even when the path forward feels uncertain. It is continuing to move forward one day at a time.
Through her example, I have also learned that resilience can be inherited, nurtured, and strengthened through the generations. The lessons I once taught her are now reflected back to me in ways I never imagined. In many ways, she has become one of my greatest teachers.
This season has also reminded me of the importance of family. Sometimes life brings us back together not because we have failed, but because we need a safe place to heal, regroup, and prepare for the next chapter. Supporting my daughter and grandchildren during this time has deepened my appreciation for unconditional love, patience, and grace.
Looking back, I realize that parenting never truly ends. The relationship simply evolves. While I will always be her mother, I am also one of her biggest supporters, cheering her on as she rebuilds her life and creates a brighter future for herself and her children.
I could not be more proud of the woman she has become. Her courage, perseverance, and unwavering love for her children inspire me every day. Through her journey, she continues to remind me that strength is not found in never falling; it is found in getting back up, again and again, no matter how many times life knocks you down.
Who in your life has inspired you through their resilience, and what have they taught you about yourself?
