Getting Lost on Purpose: The Best Way to Explore a New City

What’s the best way to explore a new city?

One of my favorite things about visiting a new city isn’t checking off a list of tourist attractions. It’s wandering down a side street, finding a cozy coffee shop, or stumbling across a local bookstore that wasn’t on any travel guide. Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you leave room for a little spontaneity.

When I arrive somewhere new, I like to start with the highlights. Visiting a few well-known landmarks helps me get a feel for the city’s history and personality. But after that, I put away the itinerary and just explore. Walking is my favorite way to do this because you notice so much more at street level. You can admire the architecture, listen to local conversations, and discover hidden gems that you would miss from a car or bus.

Food is another great way to experience a new place. Instead of heading straight for familiar chain restaurants, I try to find local diners, family-owned cafés, or neighborhood bakeries. Every city has dishes and flavors that tell a story about its culture, and sharing a meal with locals often leads to the best recommendations.

I also make a point to visit parks, public markets, and community events whenever possible. These places offer a glimpse into everyday life and help me understand what makes a city unique. There’s something special about sitting on a park bench, people-watching, and simply taking in the atmosphere.

Most importantly, I think the best way to explore a new city is to stay curious. Talk to people, ask questions, take the scenic route, and don’t be afraid to get a little lost. Some of the most memorable experiences come from unexpected moments, not carefully planned schedules.

After all, a city isn’t just a collection of buildings and attractions. It’s the people, stories, and surprises you encounter along the way that make it unforgettable.

How do you like to explore a new city? Are you a planner, an adventurer, or a little bit of both?

  1. I completely agree, Michelle. For me too, exploring a new city is much more than ticking famous attractions off a list. I love walking, observing, taking photographs, discovering local places, and experiencing the rhythm of everyday life. A quiet street, a small café, a local market or an unexpected conversation can sometimes become more memorable than a famous landmark.
