Lost in the Fog, Found in the Moment

Sometimes the view isn’t what you expected, but the journey is still worth taking.

What’s the worst travel experience you’ve ever had?

My boyfriend, Dan, and I set out for a day trip to Lawton, Oklahoma, eager to visit Mount Scott and take in the breathtaking views from one of the highest points in the state. We imagined scenic overlooks, beautiful photographs, and miles of visibility stretching across the landscape.

Mother Nature, however, had other plans.

The day was gray, damp, and wrapped in a blanket of fog. Rain followed us for much of the drive, and by the time we arrived, the views we had hoped for were hidden behind clouds and mist. Instead of sweeping vistas and sunshine, we found ourselves peering into thick fog and wondering what was supposed to be beyond it.

Was it disappointing? A little.

But as the day went on, I realized something important: not every trip is about the destination.

Sometimes it’s about getting out of the house, breaking away from routine, and spending uninterrupted time with the people who matter most. We laughed, enjoyed the drive, and created memories anyway. The weather wasn’t ideal, and our plans didn’t unfold the way we envisioned, but we still had an adventure.

Life is a lot like travel. We can plan every detail, check the maps, and create the perfect itinerary, yet unexpected storms still happen. The choice we have is whether we allow those changes to ruin the experience or whether we find joy in the detour.

Our trip to Mount Scott may not have delivered the postcard-perfect views we were hoping for, but it reminded me that some of the best moments happen when we let go of expectations and simply enjoy the journey.

The mountain will still be there on a sunnier day.

And when we return, we’ll have another adventure waiting for us.

What’s the worst travel experience you’ve ever had? Did it end up teaching you something or become a favorite memory despite the challenges? I’d love to hear your story in the comments.
