My Brother’s $100 Offer Still Echoes

Daily writing prompt
What’s the most profound piece of advice you’ve been given? Did you take it?

By Michelle Allen

My big brother Bob posing the offer
My husband Darwin and I after we said “I do”

On my wedding day, my brother — who I adored and who left this world far too soon — walked me down the aisle. Right before we reached the front, he leaned in and whispered:

“I’ll give you $100 if you turn around and run.”

I laughed, kept walking, and married the man I’d spend the next 36 years with.

My brother passed in 2012. My husband passed in 2021. I miss my brother every day. My husband… well, let’s just say there were plenty of moments over those 36 years when that $100 offer echoed in my mind like a missed investment opportunity.

Life is funny like that — sometimes the most profound advice comes wrapped in a joke, whispered by someone who knew you better than you knew yourself.

So now I’ll ask you:

What’s the most profound piece of advice you’ve been given — and did you take it?

  1. This is such a beautifully written and deeply human reflection. 🌿

The way you weave humor into such tender layers of love, loss, and memory is truly moving. That moment on your wedding day—your brother’s playful whisper, your laughter, and your decision to keep walking—feels both lighthearted and profoundly symbolic at the same time. It captures how life often holds joy and sorrow in the same breath.

    1. Thank you so much for this beautiful reflection. Your words mean more than you know. 🌿
That moment with my brother really does sit in that strange space where humor, love, and hindsight all braid together. It’s funny how a single whispered joke can turn into a memory that grows deeper layers over the years — especially after losing both him and my husband.

I’m grateful it resonated with you. Life has a way of teaching us through the soft moments just as much as the hard ones.
