🌿 The Myth of the Adult Handbook

Daily writing prompt
What’s something you used to believe as a kid that seems ridiculous now?

By Michelle Allen

I used to believe — with the confidence only a child can muster — that adults had a secret handbook. Not a metaphorical one, but a literal, leather‑bound, gold‑embossed manual that explained everything: how to fix a leaky faucet, how to fold fitted sheets, how to know what to say when someone is crying, how to file taxes, how to keep a straight face when a toddler hands you a booger with pride.

In my mind, this handbook was handed out at some mysterious checkpoint between childhood and adulthood. Maybe at 18. Maybe at 21. Maybe when you bought your first car or learned to drink coffee without making a face. But it was coming — that much I was sure of.

And then adulthood arrived… and no one handed me anything.

No handbook. No instructions. Not even a pamphlet.

Instead, I found myself standing in the middle of life with a grocery cart full of responsibilities and absolutely no idea which aisle wisdom was kept in. I learned quickly that most adults were just improvising with varying degrees of confidence. Some were better at pretending. Some were better at laughing. Some were better at quietly Googling things in the bathroom.

But no one — not a single person — had the handbook.

Looking back, it’s funny how deeply I believed in it. It was comforting, in a way. The idea that one day, everything would simply click. That adulthood was a destination rather than a long, winding, sometimes ridiculous journey of trial and error.

Now, I know better.

Adulthood isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about learning to live gracefully — or at least humorously — with the fact that you don’t. It’s about figuring things out as you go, leaning on people when you need to, and accepting that sometimes the fitted sheet will win.

And honestly? I think that’s better than any handbook could ever be.

😂 A Little Anecdote to Prove My Point

One day, I tried to change the furnace filter — a task I’ve done dozens of times. Simple, right? Except this time, I somehow managed to wedge the new filter in sideways, upside down, and possibly inside another dimension. I stood there staring at it like it had personally betrayed me.

Dan walked by, took one look, and said, “You know it doesn’t go that way, right?”

I told him I was simply testing the furnace’s ability to adapt to change.

He didn’t buy it.

We both laughed, fixed it together, and I thought: Yep. Still no handbook.
