The Best Things Aren’t Always Things

Daily writing prompt
What’s the best thing you’ve ever found randomly on the street?

By Michelle Allen

When I first read this prompt, I tried to think of the best thing I’ve ever found randomly on the street. The truth is, I can’t recall discovering any lost treasure, money, or valuable item lying on the sidewalk. I’ve never been lucky enough to stumble across anything that made me stop and say, “What a find!”

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that some of the best things we find aren’t things at all.

Over the years, I’ve found beautiful sunsets while taking an unexpected route home. I’ve found quiet moments of peace during walks when I needed time to think. I’ve found friendly conversations with strangers that brightened my day. I’ve found inspiration in places where I wasn’t looking for it.

Sometimes, the best discoveries happen when we’re simply paying attention to the world around us.

One of the things I enjoy most is noticing the small details that many people walk right past. A colorful wildflower growing through a crack in the pavement. A bird perched on a fence post. A child’s chalk drawing on a sidewalk. These aren’t valuable in the traditional sense, but they remind me that beauty can appear where we least expect it.

Life has taught me that not every treasure shines or sparkles. Some treasures are memories, lessons, and moments that arrive unexpectedly. They can’t be put in a pocket or displayed on a shelf, but they stay with us much longer than any object ever could.

If I had to answer this prompt honestly, I’d say the best thing I’ve ever found randomly on the street was a reminder to slow down and appreciate the little things. In a busy world, those moments are easy to overlook, but they often end up meaning the most.

Sometimes the greatest discoveries aren’t found by searching. They’re found by simply keeping our eyes open.
