What’s Something You Do Completely Differently From How You Were Raised?

What’s something you do completely differently from how you were raised?

By Michelle Allen

One of the biggest differences between how I was raised and how I live today revolves around family gatherings.

Growing up, Sunday dinner wasn’t optional. It was expected. Every week, my mom would put a pot roast in the oven, and by dinner time everyone would find their way to the table. There was comfort in knowing who would be there and what we would be eating. Life felt centered around family, conversations, and traditions.

Birthdays were much the same. We didn’t just mark the occasion with a quick text message or social media post. We gathered. We celebrated. I often spent hours making birthday cakes for family members because that’s what we did. It wasn’t about perfection. It was about showing love through time and effort.

Somewhere along the way, life changed.

Families spread out. Work schedules became demanding. Kids grew up and started families of their own. Today, getting everyone together can feel like coordinating a major event. Instead of weekly dinners, months can pass between gatherings. Birthdays are often celebrated through phone calls, video chats, and Facebook wishes rather than around a crowded table.

I don’t think anyone intentionally abandoned those traditions. Life simply became busier and more complicated than it was when I was growing up.

What I do differently now is that I’ve learned to accept that family connection doesn’t always look the same as it once did. I used to think family togetherness meant everyone showing up at the same place, around the same table, sharing the same meal. Now I’ve come to realize that love can exist across distances, schedules, and different seasons of life.

But if I’m being honest, I still miss those Sunday dinners.

I miss walking into my parents’ house and smelling that pot roast cooking. I miss hearing everyone’s voices at once. I miss the chaos, the laughter, and even the occasional disagreements. I miss making birthday cakes knowing that by the end of the day, we’d all be gathered together celebrating someone we loved.

Those memories remind me that while traditions may change, the values behind them don’t have to. Family, connection, and showing up for one another are still important. We may just express them differently now than we did when I was growing up.

And every once in a while, when I make a cake or cook a meal that reminds me of home, I find myself wishing we could all gather around that table one more time.

What’s something you do completely differently from how you were raised?
