Have you ever liked a villain more than the hero? Who and why?

It’s a strange feeling when you realize you’re rooting for the wrong person.

Stories usually give us a hero to admire and a villain to oppose. The hero represents the ideals we’re meant to embrace, while the villain stands in the way. Yet sometimes the villain becomes the most interesting character in the entire story.

Have you ever liked a villain more than the hero?

I know I have.

One reason is that villains are often more layered. Heroes tend to follow a clear moral path, but villains are usually shaped by conflict, loss, ambition, or regret. Their flaws make them feel more human, even when their choices are questionable.

For me, one of the most memorable examples is Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series. For most of the story, he appears cold, bitter, and untrustworthy. Readers and viewers are encouraged to see him as an antagonist. But as his story unfolds, we discover a man driven by loyalty, sacrifice, and a deep sense of remorse. His actions aren’t always admirable, but his complexity makes him fascinating. By the end, many people found Snape far more intriguing than the hero himself.

Sometimes villains capture our attention because they’re unpredictable. They challenge the hero’s beliefs, force difficult decisions, and often reveal uncomfortable truths. The best villains aren’t evil for the sake of being evil. They believe they’re justified, and that makes them compelling.

What’s really interesting is that a great villain can make us question our own assumptions. They remind us that people are rarely all good or all bad. Everyone has a story, and sometimes the character we initially dislike ends up being the one we understand the most.

So, if you’ve ever found yourself liking a villain more than the hero, you’re definitely not alone.
