If there’s one thing I wish I had started doing earlier in life, it’s believing in myself.
That might sound simple, but self-confidence has a way of influencing almost every part of our lives. When we doubt ourselves, we hesitate to pursue opportunities, speak up, take risks, or chase goals that seem just out of reach. Looking back, I realize that many of the things I was afraid to try were never beyond my abilities. More often than not, I was standing in my own way.
For years, I worried about whether I was qualified enough, smart enough, or capable enough. As a first-generation college student, there were times when higher education felt intimidating and unfamiliar. I questioned whether I belonged in those spaces. Yet once I took the leap, I discovered that growth happens when we step outside of our comfort zones, not when we stay safely within them.
The same has been true in other areas of my life. Becoming a peer mentor, starting a blog, serving my community, and returning to college all required a certain amount of courage. None of those opportunities arrived with a guarantee of success. They simply required a willingness to try.
If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be this: Stop waiting until you feel ready. Most people never feel completely ready for life’s biggest opportunities. Confidence isn’t something you have before you begin; it’s something you build by taking action, making mistakes, and learning along the way.
Of course, I can’t go back and start earlier. None of us can. But I’ve learned that it’s never too late to begin. Whether it’s pursuing a degree, changing careers, starting a business, writing a blog, or working toward personal goals, today is always a good day to take the first step.
Maybe the real lesson isn’t wishing we had started sooner.
Maybe it’s being grateful that we started at all.
What is one thing you wish you had started doing earlier in life?
