When I think about a place that feels like home, my mind immediately goes to Oklahoma City.
Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time there visiting Dan, sometimes staying for as long as six months at a time. What started as a place to visit gradually became a place where I felt comfortable, welcomed, and completely at ease.
Home isn’t always the place where you grew up or where your mailing address is. Sometimes it’s the place where your shoulders relax the moment you arrive. It’s where life feels a little less hectic, where you can be yourself without explanation, and where you know you’re cared for.
For me, Oklahoma City became that kind of place.
Of course, it helped that I wasn’t just visiting a city. I was spending time with someone who made me feel safe, valued, and at peace. The familiar routines, the local restaurants, the quiet evenings together, and even the everyday errands began to feel less like a visit and more like normal life.
What I find interesting is how our idea of “home” can change over time. As we grow and our lives evolve, home becomes less about a physical location and more about the people, experiences, and connections that bring us comfort. Sometimes home is a house. Sometimes it’s a feeling.
Whenever I leave Oklahoma City, I take those feelings with me. And whenever I return, there’s a sense of familiarity waiting for me, as if I never really left.
I’ve come to realize that feeling safe and at home is one of life’s greatest gifts. Not everyone finds that place right away, and sometimes it appears where you least expect it.
For me, that place is Oklahoma City.
What about you? What’s a place you’ve visited that felt like home, and what made it special?
“Home isn’t always where you were born. Sometimes it’s the place where your heart feels most at peace.”
