If you know me well, you know that I am not the most spontaneous person.
I’ve always been someone who likes a plan. I like to know where I’m going, what I’m doing, and what to expect when I get there. Spreadsheets, lists, calendars, and carefully thought-out decisions are much more my style than last-minute adventures.
That’s why this question made me laugh a little.
What’s the most spontaneous thing I’ve ever done?
I can think of two moments that stand out.
The first was three years ago when I decided to fly to Oklahoma City to be with Dan to be with him for his hip surgery. It wasn’t something I had spent months planning. I simply knew he needed support, and I wanted to be there for him. Looking back, it was one of those decisions that felt right even though it wasn’t part of my carefully organized life.
The second, and perhaps even bigger leap, happened the following year.
I decided to take a solo road trip from Michigan to Oklahoma City and stay for six months.
Now, for some people, that might not sound like a big deal. But for me, it was huge. I had never traveled that far from home by myself, and I had certainly never stayed away for that length of time. The thought of driving across multiple states alone and temporarily leaving behind everything familiar was both exciting and terrifying.
Yet I did it.
What made the difference?
Honestly, Dan.
Dan is everything I am not when it comes to adventure. He’s spontaneous, impulsive, and always ready to embrace whatever opportunity comes along. Where I tend to analyze every possibility, he’s more likely to say, “Why not?” and jump in.
Over the years, he’s encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and be open to experiences I might otherwise have talked myself out of. Because of that influence, I’ve discovered that some of life’s greatest memories happen when things don’t go according to plan.
Don’t get me wrong. I still love my lists and my planning.
But I’ve learned that growth often happens somewhere between preparation and adventure.
Sometimes the most meaningful journeys begin with a single decision to trust yourself and take a chance.
For me, that chance was getting in my car and driving toward something unfamiliar. What started as a road trip became an experience that gave me confidence, independence, and memories I’ll always cherish.
So now I’m curious:
✨ What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?
✨ Did it turn out the way you expected?
✨ Would you do it again?
I’d love to hear your stories in the comments!
