If aliens arrived tomorrow, what’s the first thing you’d ask them?

If aliens landed on Earth tomorrow, I know everyone expects me to ask something profound like:

“What is the meaning of life?”

“How does faster-than-light travel work?”

“What secrets of the universe can you share?”

Absolutely not.

My first question would be:

“So… have you found intelligent life anywhere, or is everyone else struggling too?”

Because let’s be honest, you’ve traveled across billions of miles of space, survived cosmic radiation, mastered technology beyond our comprehension, and somehow ended up here. That alone raises concerns about your judgment.

After that, I’d have a few follow-up questions:

  • Did you come to study us, or was this some kind of intergalactic punishment assignment?
  • Is Earth featured in your version of a reality TV show?
  • Have you also spent decades searching for a charger that was literally in your hand the whole time?
  • Does your species have meetings that could have been emails?
  • Are there mosquitoes in the rest of the galaxy, or is that something humanity specifically did to anger the universe?
  • When your spacecraft starts making a weird noise, do you turn the radio up and pretend it’s fine too?

I imagine the aliens would arrive expecting to meet a sophisticated civilization. Instead, they’ll find a species that argues with strangers on social media, pays for gym memberships they don’t use, and says “I’ll just rest my eyes for a minute” before accidentally taking a three-hour nap.

Then we’d proudly show them our greatest achievements:

  • Landing on the moon.
  • Medical breakthroughs.
  • The internet.
  • Videos of raccoons stealing cat food.

Honestly, there’s a decent chance they’d conclude Earth is unsupervised.

The real irony is that we’re all waiting for aliens to show up and explain the mysteries of the cosmos, while they’re probably wondering why a species intelligent enough to invent smartphones still can’t agree on whether pineapple belongs on pizza.

If they do arrive tomorrow, I hope they’re friendly. More importantly, I hope they’re willing to explain taxes, passwords, and why every printer suddenly stops working when you actually need it.

Because if a civilization can cross galaxies but can’t answer those questions, then maybe we’re all just making it up as we go.

If aliens arrived tomorrow, what’s the first thing you’d ask them? And be honest… would it really be about the universe, or would you finally ask where all the missing socks go?
