Traveling Together…Our Kind of Adventure

What’s the best way to meet new people while traveling?

I might be the wrong person to answer this question.

Everyone says traveling is about meeting new people. As an introvert, I used to think that meant I was doing it wrong.

Here’s the truth: you don’t have to collect new friends like souvenirs.

For some people, traveling means joining group tours, hitting every social event, and making lifelong friends in airport lounges. For me, traveling is often about quiet moments, new places, and enjoying each other’s company.

When Dan and I travel, our goal usually isn’t to meet new people. We’re not searching for new friendships, looking for travel companions, or trying to expand our social circles. Honestly, we’re both pretty introverted and perfectly happy exploring together.

That’s not to say we’re unfriendly. We have no problem saying hello, chatting with someone when the situation calls for it, or exchanging a few stories with another traveler. We just don’t feel the need to turn every trip into a social event.

Some people come home from vacation with ten new friends and a dozen phone numbers. We come home with photos, memories, and probably a list of restaurants we’d like to visit again.

For us, the best interactions while traveling happen naturally. Maybe it’s a conversation with a local who recommends a hidden gem, a funny exchange with another couple waiting in line, or a friendly chat with a hotel employee. Those moments are genuine because they’re not forced.

I think there’s sometimes an expectation that travel should be all about meeting people. But travel can also be about reconnecting with yourself, spending quality time with someone you love, and experiencing new places at your own pace.

So if you’re an introvert and you’ve ever felt like you’re “doing travel wrong” because you’re not constantly meeting strangers, let me assure you: you’re not.

Sometimes the best travel companion is the one you brought with you.

As for Dan and me, we’re perfectly content finding a quiet spot, enjoying the view, and letting everyone else do the networking.

Question for readers: When you travel, are you looking to meet new people, or do you prefer keeping to yourself and enjoying the experience with the people you came with?
