🌍 Fluent in Connection, Not Perfection

Daily writing prompt
Which languages do you speak and how did that impact your life?

By Michelle Allen

Language has always been part of the background music of my life—never the full melody, but always humming softly underneath everything. I grew up surrounded by words from different worlds, each one carrying a piece of someone I loved.

🇩🇪 Echoes of German Heritage

My mother and grandmother sprinkled German phrases into everyday life—little expressions of affection, warnings, jokes, or habits carried across generations. I never mastered the language, but those words became emotional landmarks. They were reminders of where my family came from, and of the strength and stubbornness braided into our lineage.

Even now, when I hear German spoken, something in me sits up a little straighter. It feels like overhearing a conversation between my ancestors.

🇲🇽 Spanish in Friendship and Community

Spanish entered my life through people rather than blood. My best friend growing up was Hispanic, and her home was filled with warmth, food, and a rhythm of speech that felt alive. Later, working in a school with Hispanic families, I picked up more phrases—enough to greet, to help, to show respect.

I never became fluent, but Spanish taught me something else: connection doesn’t require perfection. Even a few words can open doors, soften interactions, and show someone that you see them.

It taught me to listen with my whole self.

🇫🇷 A Year of French and a Lifetime of Appreciation

High school French was a brief chapter—one year, a handful of phrases, and a teacher who insisted that language was a form of art. I didn’t master it, but it changed the way I heard the world. French taught me to appreciate the shape of words, the way language can feel soft or sharp, musical or clipped.

It made me fall in love with the idea that every language carries its own personality.

🌱 What These Languages Taught Me

Even without fluency, each language left fingerprints on my life:

  • Identity — German reminded me of my roots.
  • Community — Spanish taught me to bridge gaps with kindness.
  • Curiosity — French sparked a lifelong fascination with how people express themselves.

I may not speak any of them fluently, but they shaped the way I move through the world—more open, more attentive, more connected.
