A Promise I Actually Kept

Daily writing prompt
What’s a promise you made to yourself that you’ve actually kept?

By Michelle Allen

There’s a quiet kind of promise—the kind you don’t announce, the kind no one else witnesses. It isn’t written on a calendar or tucked into a journal. It’s simply whispered to yourself in a moment when you know something has to change.

One of those promises came to me years ago, not during a milestone or crisis, but in an ordinary afternoon. I remember standing in my kitchen, sunlight pooling across the floor, realizing how often I rushed through my own life. I was always hurrying to the next obligation, the next responsibility, the next thing that needed fixing. I rarely paused long enough to notice the small, good moments that were already happening.

So I made myself a promise: I will slow down enough to actually live my life.

Not perfectly. Not every day. But intentionally.

I promised to savor the little things—the first sip of coffee, the way my grandchildren laugh from their bellies, the soft hum of the radio my boyfriend carries around like a relic from another era. I promised to stop bulldozing through my days as if they were tasks to complete instead of moments to inhabit.

Keeping that promise didn’t look dramatic. It looked like choosing to sit on the porch for five extra minutes. It looked like letting dinner simmer a little longer while I watched the sky change colors. It looked like saying “no” when my plate was already full, even if guilt tried to talk me out of it.

Over time, that promise reshaped me. It softened the edges. It made room for joy to slip in through the cracks. It taught me that slowing down isn’t laziness—it’s presence. It’s choosing to be awake to your own life.

And the beautiful thing is: once you keep one promise to yourself, you start trusting yourself enough to make more.
