If I had a time machine and could send just one message to my past self, it wouldn’t be a stock tip, a lottery number, or even a warning about a mistake. It would be something much simpler:
“Stop rushing. You’re not behind.”
For most of my life, I measured progress by comparison. Someone else seemed further along in their career. Someone else had already bought the house, started the business, found their purpose, or figured life out. I treated life like a race with invisible checkpoints that everyone else had somehow received a map for.
What I didn’t understand then was that almost everyone feels this way.
I spent years believing that every delay was a failure and every detour was evidence that I had made the wrong choice. Looking back, many of the moments I considered setbacks became the experiences that shaped me most. The opportunities I missed made room for better ones. The plans that fell apart pushed me toward paths I never would have chosen voluntarily but am grateful for today.
My younger self lived with a constant sense of urgency. I felt pressure to have all the answers immediately. I thought confidence came from certainty.
Now I know confidence comes from continuing forward even when you’re uncertain.
If I could send just one message, I wouldn’t reveal the future. I wouldn’t spoil the surprises, prevent the heartbreaks, or hand over a roadmap. The difficult moments taught lessons that couldn’t have been learned any other way. Removing every obstacle might make life easier, but it would also make it smaller.
Instead, I’d send reassurance.
I’d tell myself that not every opportunity is once-in-a-lifetime. That failure is not permanent. That most people are improvising more than they appear. That it’s okay to change your mind. That success rarely arrives on the schedule you’ve created for it.
Most importantly, I’d say:
“You don’t need to earn your worth through constant achievement.”
That realization took far too long to learn.
Life isn’t a straight line. It’s a collection of unexpected turns, missed exits, second chances, and discoveries that only make sense in hindsight. The things you’re worried about today will eventually become stories you tell. The decisions that keep you up at night will matter far less than the relationships you build, the people you help, and the experiences you embrace.
So if a time machine ever appeared and I only had enough room for one message, it would be short:
“Stop rushing. You’re not behind. Keep going.”
Everything else, I’d trust my younger self to figure out along the way.
