At 62 years old, I never thought much about tattoos. In fact, if you had asked me this question twenty years ago, I probably would have laughed and said, “Not a chance.”
But if I had to get one right now, it would be a hummingbird with a hibiscus flower.
The hummingbird has always fascinated me. It’s tiny, yet incredibly strong and resilient. Despite its size, it migrates long distances, adapts to changing seasons, and seems to approach life with endless energy and curiosity. There is something inspiring about a creature that can hover in place, move forward, backward, and sideways, all while making it look effortless.
The hibiscus flower would be the perfect companion. Its bright, vibrant blooms remind me of beauty, growth, and the importance of enjoying the present moment. The flower doesn’t last forever, but while it’s here, it commands attention and brings joy.
Together, the hummingbird and hibiscus represent a lesson I’ve come to appreciate more with age: life is both fragile and beautiful. We don’t have to be the biggest or the strongest to leave an impact. Sometimes, simply showing up every day with resilience, grace, and a little bit of wonder is enough.
Would I actually get the tattoo? Probably not. My skin has made it this far without any artwork, and I’m inclined to let it finish the journey that way. But if I were ever convinced to sit in a tattoo artist’s chair, a hummingbird hovering near a hibiscus flower would be my choice without a second thought.
It’s a symbol of endurance, joy, and finding beauty in every season of life.
“At this stage in life, I don’t need a tattoo to remind me of those values, but if I ever wore one, a hummingbird and hibiscus would tell my story perfectly.”
