From CB Radios and First Kisses to Honey Bees and Lifelong Friendship

When I saw this prompt, the answer came to me immediately:
Winnie the Pooh.
Most people know Pooh as the lovable bear who enjoys honey and adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood. For me, Pooh represents something much more personal.
Pooh reminds me of my youth, of simpler days when friendships were built face-to-face and conversations happened over a CB radio.
Many years ago, when I was living in Montague, I had a boyfriend who lived in Hesperia. We talked every day on our CB radios.
His handle was Tigger.
Mine was Pooh.
At the time, it seemed perfectly fitting. Tigger was energetic, adventurous, and always on the move, while I was content to spend time talking and enjoying the little moments.
Back then, he would often ride his bicycle all the way from Hesperia to my house in Montague just to spend time together. Looking back, that feels like a pretty long ride for a young boy with a crush.
He was also my first kiss.
Not behind some grand romantic backdrop you’d see in the movies, but behind our little barn and later beneath the Kissing Tree at the school playground.
At the time, those places felt magical.
Years have passed since then, and life has taken us both down different roads. He eventually moved to Virginia, while I remained here in Hesperia.
Yet somehow, through all the changes life brings, we’ve remained best friends.
That kind of friendship is rare.
And whenever I think about those days, I think about Pooh and Tigger.
What I appreciate most now is that Winnie the Pooh isn’t a character known for being the smartest, strongest, or most successful.
Pooh’s greatest gift is his heart.
He values friendship, loyalty, kindness, and appreciating the simple things in life.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized those qualities matter more than almost anything else.
One of my favorite Winnie the Pooh quotes is:
“A day without a friend is like a pot without a single drop of honey left inside.”
Whether you’re six or sixty, that’s a lesson worth remembering.
Perhaps that’s why Pooh has remained my favorite all these years.
He’s a reminder that some friendships endure.
Some memories never fade.
And some people, even when they’re hundreds of miles away, will always hold a special place in your heart.
So while my favorite cartoon character may be Winnie the Pooh, the real treasure is the story that comes with it.
A boy called Tigger.
A girl called Pooh.
Countless conversations over a CB radio.
A bicycle journey between two small Michigan towns.
A first kiss behind a little barn and beneath the Kissing Tree at the elementary school playground.
Life eventually carried us in different directions. Tagg went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force and build an impressive career that included aviation, meteorology, air traffic control, systems engineering, project management, language translation, law enforcement, and higher education. Today, he is a successful business leader, a beekeeper, and even a maker of homemade beer.
And yet, despite all those accomplishments, when I think of him, I still see the boy riding his bicycle from Hesperia to Montague just to spend time with me.
What makes me smile most is that life seems to have a wonderful sense of humor.
Today, Tagg raises bees and harvests honey.
That’s right. After all these years, Tigger ended up caring for the very thing Pooh loved most.
If someone had written that into a story years ago, I would have thought it was too perfect to be believable.
Yet here we are.
A lifetime later.
Still friends.
Still sharing stories.
Still laughing about the memories that only we understand.
Perhaps that’s why Winnie the Pooh remains my favorite cartoon character.
Not because of the honey.
Not because of the adventures.
But because Pooh reminds me that the greatest treasures in life are the friendships that stand the test of time.
Some memories fade.
Some friendships don’t.
And every now and then, life gives us a story so sweet that it could only have come from the Hundred Acre Wood.
