Bent, But Never Broken

If you had to sum up your life philosophy in one sentence, what would it be?

If I had to sum up my life philosophy in one sentence, it would be this:

Hold onto what matters, let go of what doesn’t, and trust that even the hardest chapters have something to teach you.

I didn’t arrive at that philosophy easily.

Like many people, I spent years trying to understand why certain things happened the way they did. Why some relationships lasted and others didn’t. Why some dreams came true while others quietly faded away. Why life could bring immense joy and heartbreaking loss, sometimes in the same season.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that life rarely follows the script we write for it.

I’ve learned that plans get changed by weather, roadblocks, circumstances, and sometimes by blessings we never saw coming. I’ve learned that memories become more valuable with time. That’s probably why I hold on to so many of them, from my grandfather’s Army cap and medals to old photographs, handwritten notes, and keepsakes that tell the story of the people I love.

I’ve also learned that love shows up in ordinary ways.

Sometimes it’s a phone call.

Sometimes it’s a road trip.

Sometimes it’s sharing pictures of dinner with someone hundreds of miles away because you wish they were sitting across the table instead.

Life has taught me that happiness isn’t found in perfection. It’s found in gratitude. It’s found in laughter that catches you off guard, in traditions worth carrying forward, and in finding reasons to keep moving even when the path isn’t clear.

Most of all, I’ve learned that strength doesn’t mean never bending. It means bending without breaking.

Maybe that’s why I’ve always been drawn to the willow.

The willow weathers storms. Its branches sway in the wind instead of fighting against it. It adapts, endures, and continues to grow.

That’s what I hope to do, too.

Not live a perfect life.

Not avoid every storm.

Just keep growing, keep loving, keep learning, and keep finding beauty in the story I’m living.

And if there’s one thing I hope people remember about me someday, it’s that I never stopped believing that even after life’s hardest chapters, there was still something beautiful waiting on the next page.

✨ What’s the one sentence that sums up your life philosophy?

  1. Michelle, this is such a beautiful and heartfelt reflection. I especially love the willow analogy—it reminds us that true strength is not about resisting every storm, but learning to bend, adapt and keep growing. Your thoughts on memories, gratitude and finding love in life’s ordinary moments resonate deeply with me. As I often believe, retirement or ageing should never mean retiring from life; every new day offers another opportunity to learn, love and begin again. My one-sentence philosophy would be: Be happy, be active, be focused, be alive—and never stop finding beauty in life’s journey. Thank you for sharing such a meaningful post! ❤️
