The Most Useless Fact I Know (And Why I Love Sharing It)

What’s a completely useless fact you love sharing?

We all have that one random fact tucked away in our minds. The kind of fact that serves absolutely no practical purpose, won’t help you win a promotion, and probably won’t come up in everyday conversation… yet somehow, you’re excited to share it anyway.

Mine?

A group of flamingos is called a “flamboyance.”

That’s it. That’s the fact.

Will this information improve your life? Probably not.

Will it help you pay your bills, cook dinner, or solve world problems? Definitely not.

But every time I hear the word, I smile.

Maybe it’s because flamingos already seem like nature’s version of a fashion statement. They’re bright pink, stand on one leg for no apparent reason, and somehow manage to look both elegant and ridiculous at the same time. Of course a gathering of them would be called a flamboyance. It’s almost too perfect.

The older I get, the more I appreciate these wonderfully useless bits of information. Life can be so focused on productivity, deadlines, responsibilities, and endless to-do lists that we sometimes forget the joy of learning something simply because it’s interesting.

Not everything has to be useful.

Sometimes it’s enough to be amusing.

Sometimes it’s enough to make someone laugh at trivia night or spark a conversation with a stranger.

And sometimes, a completely useless fact becomes a reminder that curiosity doesn’t always need a purpose.

So the next time someone asks if you know any interesting trivia, you can confidently tell them that a group of flamingos is called a flamboyance.

You’re welcome.

Question for readers: What’s a completely useless fact that you love sharing?

Quote of the Day: “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.” — Albert Einstein

  1. What a delightful read, Michelle! I love your choice of a random fact. A flamboyance of flamingos sounds almost as colourful and cheerful as the birds themselves! 😊 I completely agree that not everything we learn needs to serve a practical purpose. Sometimes, curiosity is its own reward, and little nuggets of information make ordinary conversations more interesting.
